My capstone project is about teaching young children how to dance, whether they have no dance experience or little experience. My research paper is all about how dance affects the mental and physical health of children. It was easy to find research on the physical health because dance is a fun aerobic activity that gets children up and active. The research on the mental aspect of it was harder to find when it is related to children. I found out that when dance is taught to children at a young age, it teaches them skills they can later apply to their own life. Dance makes the kid from a nonverbal form of communication with the dancers around them. “Dance and creative movements are known to reach to the depth of the unconscious aspects of the mind and effectively mobilize the blocked psychic content,” said Krantz. They have to be in sync with their peers while still focusing on them self and their technique. Dance teaches children a healthy balance of focusing on one's self while still being on a team.
An important aspect many dancers need to have in confidence. This is one task that is hard to teach someone, because confidence comes from within you. I struggled with teaching this to my dance club kids, but I did it by talking to them about it so they know that they need to be confident while they dance. “Dance helps kids start to form their own personality because if they feel more confident with their movements, then it will be easier for them to understand and love themselves,” said Maier. This is a skill that they can apply to their life because generally most middle school students lack confidence. The kids that I have in my dance club started to feel more comfortable dancing, which let their confidence shine through. It is different for every kid that is in my club, but many of them show how confident they are with dance by doing the dance by themselves in front of me. Dance is good for children's overall health and I see that through my dance kids and the research I found.
