Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My capstone project is a dance club for middle school students at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy. It will be in Mrs. Pocoski's room during Tiger Time every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. She will be my supervisor. At the end of the year, we will be having a show so that they can show their friends and family everything they have learned. I decided to do this because I strongly believe that dance is an art that everyone should experience, because it helps with expression of emotions. Also because I have been dancing for thirteen years and it is what I look forward to everyday. I am giving back to the Hartford community because dance is an expensive activity, and my club is free so it will give Hartford students the opportunity to try dance. Also, I am exposing these kids to an art that they may have never experienced. This project is stretching my learning because I have never taught children my own choreography, when they don't have any dance experience. Even though I have never taught inexperienced dancers, I will be cautious to teach them slowly and focus on their technique.
My research question is: What is the physical and mental affects of dance on children? And how does dance affect their life? This research will help me understand what dance has truly taught me and how it has improved my life. It will also help me explain to the boys and girls in my dance club, the affects of dance so that they can understand what they are doing and how it is helping their body and mind.
My mentor is Mrs. Jennifer LoGiudice. She is my dance teacher, and last year she was the manager of my dance studio, which is called The Dancer's Image. She is qualified to be my mentor because she knows me as a person and a dancer, and I see her every week so it is easy for her to help me. Also, she is an expert on dance considering she has been dancing her whole life. She has also been teaching girls and boys of all ages dance, so she can give me tips on ways to teach children how to dance, when they don't have any experience.
Sincerely,
Skyler Morris
