The summer of my Junior year in high school I shadowed Dr. Allison Whitaker. She is a Pediatrician at Middlesex Adolescents and Pediatrics Doctors Office. Going into the job shadow I was excited because I enjoy seeing what I could possibly be doing in the future. I don’t want to be a doctor I want to be a Physician's Assistant, but it is still very similar because I want to work in the Pediatrics field. Shadowing her was a lot of fun, because every kid that came in was excited to see her. She was very happy and positive around all of the kids and it was easy to see that she loves her job. It made me excited because I really want to be able to have patients that I have been treating since they were born. I think it would be very heartwarming to be able to be close with a family and build trust with them. It was also easy to see that everyone in this field really has to love their job or else it won’t be enjoyable.
I saw that to work with kids you really need to be a very positive person that knows how to talk to kids and make them feel comfortable. I feel like I would be very good at working with kids because I am a positive, bubbly person. Also, I work with kids now and they all have fun when I am around them and open up to me. It makes me excited thinking that I could be doing what she is doing in seven years.
When I was there she was called into the hospital to check up on a kid that was just born. I realized how flexible a doctor's schedule has to be unable to succeed. It made me realize that maybe it will be hard to have a family or a life outside of work when I am older. I am so interested in this field that it makes me excited for the future, because Dr. Allison enjoys her job and cares about the kids and families she works with. I hope I can feel the same way when I am older.
